Message from the Dean

Talofa lava and Welcome to the Faculty of Arts.

I am Saui’a Louise Mataia Milo, Dean of the Faculty of Arts here at the National University of Samoa. On behalf of the Faculty of Arts, I welcome all of you to the 2022 academic year.  You are all part of our community.

I hope this year will bring a fresh start for all of us as we continue to evolve as a community confronted by the global pandemic that has affected all our lives and changed the way we experience education.

The Faculty of Arts is the founding faculty of the National University of Samoa and we have a selection of Humanities and Social Sciences and TVET programmes that provide an understanding of our fast-changing world by examining human behaviour and social interaction in various contexts, be it social, political, cultural, environmental or economic. Gaining such knowledge allows you to predict the subtle changes in human behaviour and plan for the future.

Last year we launched our Postgraduate programmes and we encourage you to undertake postgraduate study at the Faculty of Arts as it is gradually growing.

We have three departments that make up this faculty: the Social Sciences department which offers majors in Geography, Sociology, History, and other disciplines; the English and Foreign Languages department offers a suite of courses- English language and literature courses, Japanese and Chinese languages. The Media and Communications department offers a Media and Journalism major for the Bachelor of Arts and a Media and Journalism TVET programme.  This department also teaches communication courses for all NUS TVET programmes.  Details of our programmes are available on the NUS website.

We have a highly qualified academic staff who will facilitate your learning while you are here with us.  They are all very supportive and will help guide you in your journey.

The Faculty of Arts staff is also a community of researchers in pursuit of research excellence that will not only inform our teaching but also key decision-makers and policies.  Our researchers frequently collaborate with various experts, ministries, and Non-Governmental Organisations in and outside of Samoa on issues that affect the country and the region.

I hope that you will enjoy your experience here and use all the opportunities on offer.  We are here with you, and for you. I am confident that you will make lifelong friends and improve your career prospects, and that you will complete your studies successfully. I wish you all a happy and safe journey in education this year!

Manuia o outou laasaga o lenei tausaga.

Saui’a Louise Mataia Milo
