JAPANESE VOLUNTEERS VISIT NUS CAMPUS AT PAPAIGALAGALA |

Three newly arrived Japanese volunteers recently visited the Papaigalagala Campus of the National University of Samoa as part of their orientation programme. They were: Mr Sugimura Toshiyasu, Japanese language teacher; Mr Irie Katsuhiko, motor mechanic; and Ms Higa Natsuyo, a fine arts teacher. Mr Toshiyasu has been assiged to the National University of Samoa to replace the current Japanese lecturer, Ms Sakuma Makiko; Mr Katsuhiko has beeen assigned as a teacher to Don Bosco Technical Institute, Alafua; and Ms Natsuyo will help out at the Penehuro School of Fine Arts, Letava. |

SAMOAN NURSES HONOUR INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE NURSE |

Samoan nurses from all over the globe have been meeting at the National University of Samoa campus in Apia, 13 to 19 January, to celebrate the inaugural Samoan nursing symposium marking the 2010 International Year of the Nurse. The theme for the symposium was nursing and midwifery in a revitalised primary health care context and has attracted over 200 nurses mainly from Australia, New Zealand and Samoa. Activities included lectures by experts, panel discussions, country papers, debates, drama presentations, visits to tsunami areas, group discussions, workshops and other activities. |

The National University of Samoa and the University of Otago launched a new postgraduate course titled ‘Applied Social and Health Research Methods in the Pacific’ at the Papaigalagala campus Tuesday, 5 January. The course is aimed at improving the research skills of postgraduate students principally in the area of health, said Dr Tamasailau Suaalii-Sauni, the University of Otago coordinator of the course. The fifteen participants in the course are evenly divided between students from Otago University , National University of Samoa and the general public. |
